Beatty Road N16

Our client, an illustrator, works from home and had been working from a small room in her maisonette flat in Stoke Newington. She commissioned us to design a garden studio, from which she could do her work thus giving her back the use of the room in her flat and creating separation between home and work.

As the main property is a flat, permitted development rights did not apply and permission for the garden studio had to be gained via planning.

The garden is reasonably small and fairly overlooked so the studio was designed to maximise the internal space whilst minimising the impact on any neighbouring properties.

In order to maximise the ceiling height inside the studio it was deigned to be sunken so that the floor level was lower than the garden.  As such the bottom of the garden was excavated so that the top of the desk inside the studio was at the same height as the external garden ground level. This allows the studio to be discreet and private whilst also being spacious, light and airy.
